New Glasses

Every year I have a check up at the Optometrist. Apparently I have freckles on the back of my eyeballs that need yearly monitoring. I also have a scar on the back of one - the Optometrist said this is usually from a eyeball munching parasite, that I would have had during the flu one time. Never fear, he's gone now.

Anyway, for the first time in several years my prescription hasn't changed. So I figure that's a good reason to order some more glasses online. I have a great site (thanks NB!) that I use. I end spending abotu $100 for three pairs.

The website is http://www.zennioptical.com/ Check it out!

So now I have two presciption sunglasses and SIX pairs of glasses! And so you can see them I took photos to show you. Please note that neither the glasses nor I look particularly brilliant in these pictures, but they give you a bit of an idea.

These are my originaly pair - circa 2004. They are starting to chip around the edges and the plastic starting to yellow - damn foundation. They are still my faves and the ones I resort too when I'm tired.

These ones are actually grey. They are thinner than the first pair.

These ones are black on the outside and blue on the inside. They are slightly lopsided - which I need to get fixed. They are my usual "home" glasses.
These are the latest pair I bought. They are the first "half-frame" I've had because I've always worried about how on earth the glass would stay in and fortuetsly one of the lenses fell out within 5 minutes of showing them off at work the next morning. I managed to get it back in ok, fingers crossed it stays in.

Yep, pinky purple ones. They are pretty cool in real life, despite looking a bit fuddy duddy here. I like the change in colour - they will be great for when I need to add a bit of spunk to an outfit.

JP's been calling these my "Granny Glasses". They are metal with white stripes, and I like em! I like that they are different!

And just so you know here, are my prescription sunnies:

Lasagne

Tonight I made my very first Lasagne. Well really JP, RC & I made a lasagne. I was in charge of meat, layering and washing the veges. RC rescued the cheese sauce off of JP. JP ended up being in charge of peeling the garlic and keeping me away from the oven. Probably the most important task of them all.

We ended up with a very delicious lasagne that had a meat layer, a cheese sauce layer, a vege layer and a crispy topping. And there is lots of left overs too - yay!

I'm enjoying doing more cooking and finding new reciepes, or even old reciepes that I'm learning to do for myself.

Next I wanna make a seafood laksa and have a go at polenta. Both recipes I've had out but never made myself, so I'm excited to give them a go.

"Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid"

Next in the Alphabetical Movie Project was "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid". We'd put this off for a while because JP said it was rather long. These days we only really have time to watch DVD's after work. However we then discovered that actually it's only an hour and a half, so we had time to watch it after work in the end.

"Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid" is based on the true story  about Butch Cassidy and his partner in crime The Sundance Kid. They were 19th Century train and bank robbers famous in the American Wild West. They annoy one to many bank owners and find themselves being hunted. They decide to take Sundance's girlfriend and flee to Bolivia.

The classically gorgeous Paul Newman and Robert Redford star as the clever and charming duo. They just make you fall in love with them and want them to get away with everything. How can you not? Just look at those rugged good looks and charming smiles!

The story is very well written and well paced. It has the right amount of action along with quiet moments.

One thing I've noticed about these older movies compared to the more modern movies is that they don't rely so heavily on music to portray the emotion they would like you to be feeling. These days it would seem that music is used whenever there is a lull in the conversation, but not so in "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid" and it makes for a nice change. The silence makes the conversation more meaningful. This is not to say that there is no music at all. There is a rather soppy scene between Sundance's girlfriend and Butch Cassidy riding around an orchard on a bicycle to the song "Raindrops keep falling on my head . . . "

This is classified as a Western, but it's a lot more fun than a typical 1960's made Western movie. It's definetly worth a watch. You'll also make your man very happy and earn some brownie points.

Next? The last B - "The Butterfly Effect". Then the C's. At last.

26 July 2010

Eh. . .

Do you ever have "one of those days" - not the kind where everything that could go wrong does, but the one where everything is exactly the same as it always is, and that's the problem. Well, I had one of those days today.

The day was just exactly the same as always. I probably could have scripted the day and gotten about 90% accuracy. The only thing that was surprising was that my car repairs only cost $85 instead of the expected couple hundred. So that was good, and now my car doesn't sound like it's trying to strangle a canary which is always a plus.

Everyone that does moan did. Work was the same as it is every Monday.

Or maybe this is just a typical Monday after large weekend? I hope not. I'm bored already.

Engagement Party

Last night was Lee and Morgan's Engagement Party. Lee did the invitiation and it was beautiful. We were asked to bring a small dessert, except that Lee isn't a good speller and it said "please bring a small desert". So we did. Or the family did anyway. haha

Lex made a small diaragma with sand and toy meerkats, then painted the box black and glued on stars.
Dad bought a box of star wars lego - they fly through the desert.
Mum got a toy goat and stuck him on a rock in some sand.
I got a postcard from the middle east that's of camels in the desert and framed it.
JP & RC's daughter L made a desert in a container and also took along one of my camel soft toys.

Oh and we also took some desserts (Brandy Snaps, Icecream and Cheesecake - yum yum!)

Of course Lee & Morgan thought the deserts were great as well as embarrasing - if anyone's going to call her on a spelling mistake, it's going to be us. But the rest of the party goers did seem to find it amusing, so it's all ok :)

Dad bought a 'crate' of champagne which went down very well with the guests. It was pretty yummy too. Lee and I had the worlds smallest champagne flutes - they held about 3 mouthfuls in total. So I decided to be a good hostess and offer the bottle around to everyone, which also meant that I could top up my tiny glass whenever I needed too. hehe.

It was such a mixture of people, my entire family was there including my Gran, plus TC and PS (who arrived rather late after being dropped off at my house instead of Lee's) who have known Lee since she was about 5 years old. There was Lee's work mates, Morgan's friends from the Waikato, Bandmates, Friday Clubbers.

Mum left early on as she's not too well and unfortunetly missed what turned into some lengthy speeches. It all happened by mistake I think. Someone clinked a glass to get another persons attention, but instead it got the entire parties attention. So Morgan stood up to speak, followed by several other people. Most telling how they know Morgan, how he met Lee and how awesome she is. I raised a toast to Lee & Morgan having a long and happy life. MM piped in with a few words too which was nice. I noticed that Morgan's friend girlfriend was videoing them, so Mum you might be able to seem them if Lee can get a copy?

The cutest bit of the whole night was the 18mth old. He's the gorgeous son of one of Lee's friends (who's also a bridesmaid). He was the life of the party, playing with everyone, touching everything. He even managed to start some fun finger pointing and touching game with JP. Super cute.

And then there was my lizard, who later got the name 'Ernie'. He was leftover from the desert making extravaganza, so Mum told me to stick him in my top and perhaps some hot single man would fish him. So I did. The 18mth old fished  him out first, then the gay guy, then my friends' partner, then the other bridesmaid. I decided that Ernie just wasn't doing his job right or I was wearing him incorrectly?! At the end of the night he didn't even come home with me haha.

Now I just need some neurofen and water and I'll be good. :)

The Boys are in town

This morning I was up early to pick up Dad and Lex from the airport. They one of those stupid early-morning-business-man flights and on a Friday! So I was up at 6am and left the house while it was still dark. That's pretty good for me! Usually I'm dragging myself out of bed at 7.20am which is the absolute latest that I can get up and still get to work in time. Even then it's cutting it fine. Really I should get up at 7am.

Anyway, I was early to the airport so I got a muffin and a coffee - both equally bad and equally expensive. The boys finally arrived and we made our way out of the airport via baggage claim. Did you know that if you use your credit card to pay the parking ticket at the booth it just debits your card and doesn't ask for a pin number or anything?! It's a little scary. We drove to my work where the boys took the car and left me to work. Being a Friday it wasn't so bad and the boys came back to pick me up at the end of the day. What good family :)

Here's what I CAN tell you

It's true, I've been avoiding my blog. Why? Because there seems to be nothing of great interest happening. Or that that is happening is something I can't write about on here for fear of someone involved reading it.

Rock. Me. Hard Place.

I don't want to bore my readers with insignificant happenings, nor do I want to embarras or frustrate the people I might blog about or spill the beans. hmmmmm what to do, what to do.

Anyway, blah, blah, blah. . . Here's things I can tell you:

- It's a warm winter. It's been cold, but not freezing. It's rained on and off, but lets be honest it's been a pretty mild winter so far.

 - Lee & Morgan's engagement party is this Saturday and it's my brothers birthday tomorrow - so will be a weekend of celebrations.

 - I went to the Optometrist today for my yearly check up and the freckles on the back of my eyeballs are still the same and not growing - that's a good thing. So this evening I've been online and ordered three pairs of glasses for about $80 american and they should arrive in about 10 days.

- Last night I played my first ever game of scrabble. It's never really appealed to me, but JP suggested it and I actually enjoyed it. I'm not so good a thinking of words bigger than 4 letters, but I guess it comes with practise?

 - My car is making odd noises - I think it's either the wheel alignment or something else wheel orientated. I'll get Lex and Dad to take it for a spin in the weekend and get them to diagnose the problem for me.

 - We had the lawns mowed and now they look great. Coupled with the weeding I did with Mum a week or so ago the garden is looking much happier and prettier.

 - I went to the Trade Aid shop today and now I really want to buy one of the Kashmir Rugs that they have on display in their window (this is the Wgtn City store). They are about $140, so will think about it. I'm not sure where I'd put it seeing as I'm not sure where I'm going to put the persian rug from Gran. Perhaps my room?

- Sixteen's leg is getting bigger, but it's still not bothering him.

- I haven't done my goal setting for June or July for work yet. I need to get on to this, but haven't found the time. I'm thinking that I'll make a long term goal and then break it down to short term goals for the block (4 month periods), rather than try and do monthly goals.

- I picked Fresias and some other beautiful smelling flower from my garden about a week and a half ago and they are still smelling fresh and wonderful. It's nice to come home too.

 - I still want more jewellary. It's an obsession. I have over 100 necklaces' and 25 rings. But I love them all and I can't help but stop and browse the jewellary sections in shops.

 - I need to cut down my caffiene intake, carbohydrate consumption and possibly switch to a dairy free diet. I know I feel lighter and have more energy when I cut out the volume of carbs I eat. When I cut out dairy my hayfever isn't so bad. The caffiene thing is more about addiction. I have a lot of it and I love it. Maybe I'll save that one till last.

 - As of this Friday I have worked for my work for 3 and a half years. Which means my sick leave rolls over. That's about it really. I've been in a workplace longer than this (4 years is the longest), but this feels like such a major accomplishment. It's either the amount of work I've put in and crap I've put up with. Or it might have something to do with the fact that I resigned a year ago, but ended up staying and now it's a year later. Weird. One day I'll tell you that story.

- One of my faveourite authors is releasing a new book on 5th Aug - "The Empress of Ice Cream" by Anthony Capella. I can't wait. He writes great love stories and sets them in the past and surrounded by food. Amazing.

- I've been taking Vitamin C tablets (berry flavour not orange) and kinda enjoy the sweet berry hit each morning. I'm not sure that they're doing much good, but they can't be hurting so why not?!

I could go on and on I've realised. But I won't. It's bed time for me and besides, I need something to talk about tomorrow! hahaha.

19 July 2010

"The Breakfast Club", "Brick", The Bridge On the River Kwai", "Bring It On" and "A Bugs Life"

It would appear that I have been struck down with a wee bit of JPitis (that is when you get really behind on your Alphabetical Movie Project reviews and it'll take forever to catch up). I know I have JPitis because this morning he emailed me the latest reviews he'd done and  he's now caught up with me and we are BOTH five reviews behind what we're watching. I hope to rectify that now. . . .

"The Breakfast Club" is old school - starring the '80's brat pack of teenagers - Ally Sheedy, Judd Nelson, Emilo Estevez, Anthony Michael Hall and Molly Ringwald.

This motley group of teenagers are assembled in the school library on a Saturday morning for detention. They fit the molds of your typical school stereotypes (the jock, the brain, the kook, the princess and the rebel). They are there all day with only a piece of paper for an essay and each other for company. At 7.30am they don't know each other, and at the end of the day they know way to much.

I remember hearing about "The Breakfast Club" a long time before I saw it. Molly Ringwald was hyped up to be the golden child of the 80's, but I never really understood what made her so amazing. Meanwhile, for some reason, I've always had a thing for Emilio Estevez - something about him being so hot in "Mighty Ducks" and yes I was a teenager at the time!

All these actors do a great job at portraying their sterotypical roles seperately and together. However, I have always thought there was something slightly missing from the movie. I just can't put my finger on it. The pacing is ok and the music is ok, and the end is ok. Perhaps it's all just ok? There's no big finish or any big plot lines, it all hums along at the same pace the entire time.

Should you watch it? Yeah, sure. You will probably enjoy it and it is a 80's classic, but you aren't missing much if you do decide to pass it by.

"Brick". JP spent several months tracking this one down for his collection, hoping to get it before we got to the "B-R-I"s. And he did.

What's it about? Good question. It's set in what I assume is a typical American high school in the naughties. A young teen is trying to track down his missing ex-girlfriend who appears to have gotten herself caught up with the 'wrong' crowd. To find her he befriends the local drug king.

What really stands out about this movie is the script - if you watched this movie with your eyes closed you'd be forgiven for believing this was a 1930's black-and-white detective movie. It takes a while to get used to it, especially when you're trying to connect it to the high school setting. After a while you have to forget trying to connect the two and just go with it.

"Brick" has a cast full of actors more famously known for their TV roles - Nora Zehetner from "Grey's Anatomy", Emilie de Ravin from "Lost" and Joseph Gordon Levitt from "3rd Rock From The Sun". He made a name for himself as a geeky teenager, and while you'd think this was the same type of role, here is manages to show a much wider range and great acting skills.

It took me a while to realise that I'd seen this before. I don't know if that means I didn't watch it properly the first time, or if I didn't like it enough to remember it. In fact, I found myself getting frustrated at the detective speak. While it's a cool way of portraying a story, I just found it annoying.

It's a good story, but it's not really something I was really that interested in. You'll probably enjoy the detective story in a high school, it makes the normal movie storyline much more interesting. I don't need to see it again.
Now here's one of JP's movies that I expected to be a boring war movie. I was pleasantly surprised. It was a war movie, but it wasn't as big a bore as I thought. In fact, I even managed to follow the story and actually CARE about the ending. haha.

"The Bridge on the River Kwai" is about a British Colonel that leads his men to build a bridge over the river kwai - a project run by a Japanese PoW camp. What he doesn't know is that his own side are planning on blowing up the bridge as soon as it's finished. Do they build it? Do they blow it up? You'll have to watch it to find out.

Filmed in 1957, it won lots of awards including Best Picture in 1958. It stars actors I don't know (yes I'm a modern movie chick, and no I don't care if you think that's stupid) like Alec Guiness, William Holden and Jack Hawkins.

The movie is easy to follow and has a good storyline. You start to feel a sense of compassion and respect for what they are doing despite believing it's perhaps the wrong thing to do. But when the same side are planning on blowing up the bridge you don't know if you should be backing the British, booing the British or flipping sides and cheering for the Japanese. And then you decide that that's not the best thing and you go back to 'which side am I on - the British or the British?'

Do I think you should watch it - sure. Just like "The Boys From Brazil" you'll have to get past the grainy, old movie-ness of it and enjoy it for what it is. And, if you're lucky, you'll earn some big brownie points when you agree to watch this with your fella or impress the boys when you can actually talk about this movie becuase you've seen it :)

"Bring It On" was a movie that I was looking forward to mainly because JP wasn't. Mean? Nah, he has some doosies of his own that he tortures me with. The thing is, JP decided he kinda liked it, only because it stars lots of young, pretty girls in short skirts. When I tried to annoy him with "They are all barely legal teenagers" he quips back with "yes in the movie, but in real life they are adults playing teens, so it's ok." hmmm. ok JP, whatever helps you sleep at night.

"Bring It On" is about a cheerleading squad that wins national titles every year and this year should be no different. Torrance Shipman is promoted to captain and recruits a new team member, who delivers the news that their routines are stolen. Oh dear, now they must come up with new routines in order to compete against the squad they stole them from, at the Championships.

Kirsten Dunst stars alongside Eliza Dushku, Jesse Bradford and Gabrielle Union. Not stand out roles in any way for any of these actors, but I like them all. They do well in other movies and I suppose this movie is a stepping stone for them. It was made in 2000 and definetly feels dated now that we are watching it 10 years later. It was such a cult film that it spawned several sequels - none of which star any of the original stars.

The movie is fun - lots of dancing and singing and teenage angst. It's a no brainer really, but that's ok - sometimes it's fun to just sit and watch and have fun. There's a bit of a romance thrown in for fun. The only thing that brings it down is the racism of the movie. The wealthy, champion team all happen to be white, while the down-on-their luck, poor team are the black kids. In 2000 that seemed to be ok but these days you wouldn't see a movie so blatantly colour divided. At worst you'd see one black kid on the white team and vice versus. It's not so much a critiscism but merely an observation.

Should you watch it - Yes! If you don't have fun with the cheering and hilarity, then you'll enjoy the girls jumping up and down.

It's at this point that JP does a happy little dance. I've been threatening to buy "Brokeback Mountain" and it would be here that we watched it. However, by hitting the play button on "A Bugs Life" he's avoided the horror. Lucky man.

"A Bug's Life" is awesome! It's Pixar - my favourie animated movie makers. It was made in 1998 at the beginning of Pixar's career. They were just starting to make a name for themselves as animators in the movie business. Since "Toy Story" and "A Bug's Life" they have continued to make great strides in animation. Their yearly movie release is always highly anticipated by both children and adults alike. personaly I own all of them made since "Toy Story" was made in 1997.

Anyway, back to "A Bug's Life". Flik is a worker ant sent to find warrior bugs to help the colony collect enough food for themselves and the grasshoppers that terroise them. He beliefs he's found them in a group of circus bugs who help them to fight the grasshoppers in a way that they hadn't expected.

This is the third movie that we've watched so far that sees us going inside an ant hill. What I like about this movie, more than the others, is the involvement of the other bugs. There's the mexican beetles, the whiney stick insect, the dramatic praying mantis, the hefty caterpillar and the manly ladybug. They make a great ensemble and a great contrast to the colony of ants.

This movie has some great actors lending their voices - Dave Foley, Bonnie Hunt, Kevin Spacey, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Phyllis Diller, David Hyde Peirce and a young Hayden Paneittere. All great actors and all great voices that make for great characters. Sometimes movie makers make the mistake of getting big name actors for their voices but they aren't great voice actors. But Pixar get great voice actors and if they happen to be big names, then great, but it's not the most important.

JP and I were discussing what makes this movie so great, or any Pixar movie so great. I think it's the way they use light and texture. "A Bug's Life" has some amazing light shots. The texture shots are still in development here. I can only say that having since seen their later work, it was still pretty good and ahead of the animation pack for it's time.

I could go on and on about how wonderful this movie is and give you a hundred reasons why you should watch it, but I'm not going to. You should just watch it! WATCH IT! It's brilliant. It's fun. It's sweet. Watch it - you'll enjoy it, I promise.

What's next? - The end of the B's: "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid" and "The Butterfly Effect". Then we're on to the C's. There's 28 of them - I counted. That's the most of any letter we own. Crikey.

Websites that keep me occupied

So, I know I've been a bit slack in my blogs recently. But to be fair, my laptop has been having "issues" and I just can't be bothered trying to resolve them at the moment.
I've been fairly busy with life as well. So, I thought I'd quickly fire off some websites for you to check out. These are the sites that I find myself reading/looking at reguarly (for work or non-work reasons):

- of course

- hilarious site showing photos of weird people at Wal-Mart (an american cross of The Warehouse, K-Mart & New World)

- work

- fascinating site following a family with 7 children, the youngest being quints

- great bargains

- news from around NZ and the world

- google is your best friend!

- info on all the TV shows you watch

 - where I watch all the TV shows. It's up-to-date with the American seasons and free.

A change is as good as a holiday

For a while I've been feeling unsettled at home. I think partly it's because I'm living in the old family home, without any of my family. Just me, my cats and my best friend - which is cool in it's self, but it's not the family I used to live with in that home. Am I making any sense?!

JP and I don't use the lounge to much - in fact we only use it when we have guests over. Normally if we watch telly we watch it online on our computers, or we're watching DVD's (usually in JP's room as he has the bigger TV and a warm heater to keep toasty by).

So I decided to make my home more 'homely' or more like it was my home with my stuff. JP moved in in Jan and it's now August, so that's plenty of time for him to move some of his stuff around the house rather than in his room. I figured if he hasn't done it by now then it's not going to happen.

I filled the two large book shelves in the lounge with all my travel books, childrens' books, teaching & psychology books, wedding books/magazines and random books I've collected over the years. I had a great time going through my boxes in the attic trying to find books to use.

I went through the boxes and my room to find all the ornaments that I've collected over the years and put them out on the mantle place. I also took all the old paintings that were family artworks and replaced them with random pictures from magazines and old calenders that I'd kept because I liked them, but had no where to place them.

There are still several boxes upstairs to go through and I haven't even opened the box of ornaments that came from Grandads house six months ago. I'm sure they will give me more things to use around the house.

Yesterday I went over to Gran's house to see what she had on offer (she's clearing out her house now that she's moving into a retirement home). I managed to collect several books - mainly recipe books and puzzle books - and small, glass ornaments that she's had for years. I took them because they are sentimental more than anything and I like that they are now at my house. And, I discovered that I'm getting her beautiful, original, persian rug, sooner than expected (it was being left to me in her will). I'm stoked!

JP can still move his stuff out and around if he wants. I can make room. But in the meantime I like having my stuff out and finally making the home more 'mine' than the family home. A change really is as good as a holiday!

Quick Week Recap

Ok, so it's been a pretty busy week and I've been sick, so here's a really quick recap of all the things that have been happening:

- I've been sick (yeah yeah, I know I said that already, but I'm recaping remember). I've had a cold, which means I then get a sinus infection, a chesty cough and very sore ears. I had to take a couple of days off sick.

- We had our Mid-Winter Educator Dinner at work. Always a big affair every year and another good one this year. Held at the Temperance Bar in town. The food was rather crappy and the team left early, but otherwise a good night.

- Went wedding dress shopping on Saturday and got some good ideas. I'm meeting Lee tomorrow after work to see another one that she has found.

- Had lunch on Sunday with the crew. Was a fun catch up and we even managed to get out a loud round of "Happy Birthday" to TC who insisted she was just 18 with 12 yrs experience.

- Had a team meeting on Monday in which a rather sick me was singled out and yelled at by a team mate. It wasn't pleasant and she doesn't believe she did anything wrong, just says I took it personally because I was sick. hmmmmm. Then had a team building excercise, which of course after the meeting, I was not too happy about.

- Started taking Vitamin C tablets (berry flavour seeing as I hate Orange flavour) and Evening Primrose tablets (good for skin conditions, PMS symptoms and flu symptoms - all of which I get). Feeling a little better, but not sure if the tablets have anything to do it.

- Gran is moving in to a retirement village and my Aunt has decided she's buying a house as a result of Gran's moving out. She's rather impulsive and only 32 hours after the decision of Gran moving, she's put an offer in on a place. hmmm. Good thing the trustees of the trust have Gran's best interests in mind.

- Dad's been getting good grades in school - well done Dad! He's been keeping me posted on the goings on in AKLD division of the family. Another area where I can only hang my head and sigh.

- Had a chat with my coach support person at work (kinda like the manager, but not) about the very uneven workloads between me and my counterpart (mine being twice as big). Also chatted about my future plans and I expressed an interest in working towards a coaching role myself. Hopefully with her support and guidance I'll be on track to pursuing this move.

- Had another Wedding Planning meeting. We're at the "lots happening, but not much to finialise" stage, so it was a rather quick meeting. But it was good to have dinner with Mum and Lee - always nice to have a Mum and Sis dinner.

- Had my haircut tonight. Cut and Colour - lovely :) I'm sticking with the dark chocolate brown - I love it. Every now and then I think of going back to natural colour, but I could never do it, I love the dark colour to much.

- JP got a new phone and it's pretty 'gay'. Thats his words. It's so light and little - it's just like a toy one you'd give a kid to play with. It's provided much amusement and teasing.

- Overheard some rumours at work of people complaining about me - again, not very pleasant. I've decided to ignore them - if they can't be adult enough to discuss their issues with me directly, then it's their problem not mine. As a result I've noticed some strange behaviour from one colleague - she's been very off and rude with me. I'm not to concerned - I'm not that fond of her. It's just odd.

- Ordered more medication for my cat Sixteen. I get a new lot each month and this month when I picked it up they told me that I'd have to bring Sixteen in for a check up before the next repeat. Why? I ask, Is it because you told me that Sixteen would only live for a few more weeks and the medication would keep him comfortable? And that was the beginning of Feb! My cat's doing the "Up yours Vet!" hehehehe. Love it.

And here he is, isn't he lovely!:

So, not such a "quick" recap after all, but it's been a long long week!

Snail Internet

Snail Internet just doesn't sound right, but that's what I have - Internet access going at the speed of snail mail. And, snail mail is probably the fastest way to reach me at the moment, hahaha.

JP and I are on a good internet plan, with mega amounts of whatever it is we need to keep us running, however we appear to have run out this month. I blame the cold weather and it getting dark earlier for the fact that we have used it all. To be honest, it's probably all the online TV I watch.

Anywho, it refreshes itself again on Thursday, so it's not to long to wait. Hope you can cope without my very insightful/crazy blogs until then . . . . .

My sister is going to be a beautiful bride!

Yesterday, me, Mum and Lee went for teh first wedding dress shopping expidetion. We started at a place in Stokes Valley that allowed us to take photos (not that I'll be putting any up just on the off chance that Morgan reads this!). We had the place to ourselves which was nice. The second place was a little more traditional and the last place was very traditional and your standard/normal type dresses.

This trip was mostly about trying to get ideas. Straight away we realised that Lee is not a 'white' wedding dress kind of girl. She's better in the ivories, creams and champagne colours. In white she looks washed out, but in the tinted colours she looks tanned.

Then, we decided that Satin just isn't our friend. The slinky dresses, while beautiful and sexy just weren't "enough" for Lee. Lee needs a funky dress for her funky personality.

The last two places wouldn't allow us to take photos unfortunetly, but understandable. It does make it difficult to remember what dress was what.

The first two places let us go through every dress, pick out the ones to try on and them try them on. But at the third place we went to was full of grumpy looking brides with their grumpy looking sisters, plus the grumpy looking sales girl who so clearly wanted to get home from work that she rushed Lee through the process. In fact we weren't even allowed to look through a third of the dresses before she was rushed into the changing room.

We found a few that were lovely and one that may be a potential winner. We'd make a few alterations and add a few flourishes of course. There's still a few places to go look at, hopefully with a few more funky dresses, but at least we've got some direction now.

The other thing we investigated was making our own headpieces for the bride and the bridesmaids. I hope Lee realises I wasn't kidding about the bright pink butterfly and feathers! Oh and we may go for chocolate brown of the bridesmaids instead of Olive. All a work in progress of course. Check in again later for more details . . .

Dinners & Drama

We do a big social event dinner at work twice a year - at Christmas and in the Middle of Winter.

Last time it was the end of November and my Grandad had died that morning. I still went to the dinner. I didn't stay long seeing as I'd been awake since 9pm the night before.

This time I'm sick. Got the full on cold, earache, sore chest and general feel-awfulness. I'm still going. I don't plan on staying long - will probably make a quiet exit just after dinner.

Something seems to happen every time we have a dinner - should I be worried?

Being Poorly

I'm Poorly. "Poorly" is a term used by my best friend slash flatmate to describe being unwell. So instead of telling you I'm Sick, I simply tell you I'm Poorly. I do the know where he got it from, but I'm poorly and can't be bothered trying to tell you .

I hate being 'poorly' and I hate having to take time off work for several reasons.

1. Today is the first day of the month, which means there are reports due today.

2. It's the last Thursday of a pay period, which means all payroll changes and calculation changes are due to the payroll team today.

3. It's EM's last week in our office and I'm going to miss her when she's gone next week and now I've missed a day of her being there. And, as a result of missing this day I've had to ask one of my other colleagues to help me out with a wee "we'll see ya round" secret pressie thing for her. (I'm fairly certain she doesn't read this, but if she does I'm pretty sure she already knows we'd do something for her.)

4. I have no sick leave pay left - my next allotment kicks at the end of July, so I'll have to take today as unpaid or annual leave, and seeing as I can't afford not to be paid, I guess it'll have to be one of my few annual leave days that I was saving for a short road trip to the Waikato in a few months.

I spent last night and this morning stressing out about the first two points, frantically emailed all these instructions and requests to my counterpart (who came back to work today after 3 days off) to get stuff done for payroll. By the time I got to lunch time I was so stressed and tired I had a sudden epihany -
Sometimes my life is allowed to be about me.
I'm feeling pretty terrible, and my workmates will be able to cope without me and if they can't, then tough, I'm poorly!!

So I spent the rest of the afternoon tucked up in my trackies and hoodie, in bed with the heaters on, a box of tissues, two very pleased to have someone home with them pussycats and some dvds.

Tomorrow night's the big Mid-Winter Dinner social event that we host for our Educators every year. It's a big deal and always lots of fun. I really don't want to miss it, so I'm determined to go to work tomorrow. Whether I make it to the dinner or not is yet to be seen, but I would have to be pretty damn poorly to not go. Fingers crossed everyone!
